Skills.

Use the Pioc 's Poc to develop the techniques needed for learning the many skills of the game. 

Remember- Right handers use the red side for most of these skills and left handers use the blue side.

For best results practice these skills inside at first or on an astroturf surface.

Each child should have their own Pioc 's Poc hurl and a light bouncy ball such as a tennis ball at first.

The Jab Lift

Skill instructions

1. Hold the Pioc 's Poc hurl in the dominant hand only with the thumb on the thumbprint.

2. Bend low and place hurl behind the ball.

3. Gently flick the hurl under the ball with the sharp part of the hurl.

4. Once the ball is on the bas, rise up and use the catching hand to grab the ball as you're rising.

The Dribble

Skill instructions

1. Hold the Pioc 's Poc hurl in the dominant hand only.

2. Bend low and keep the heel of the hurl to the ground.

3. Gently tap the ball ahead as you move forward.

4. Use both sides of the hurl to tap the ball ahead as you go.

The Air Strike

Skill instructions

1. Grip the Pioc 's Poc hurl firmly in the dominant hand.

2. Start the swing above the shoulder with the elbow bent.

3. Toss the ball head high and swing in a 'C' shape to connect with the ball at stomach height.

4. Follow through on the ball to ensure distance.



The Roll Lift

Skill instructions

1. Hold the Pioc 's Poc hurl in the dominant hand only with the thumb on the thumbprint.

2. Bend low and place hurl over the ball.

3. Roll the ball back and gently flick the hurl under the ball with the sharp part of the hurl.

4. Once the ball is on the bas, rise up and use the catching hand to grab the ball as you're rising.



The Solo

Skill instructions

1. Hold the Pioc 's Poc hurl in the dominant hand only with the thumb on the thumbprint.

2. With the catching hand, gently place the ball in the center of the bas.

3. Move around slowly, trying to keep the ball balanced.

4. If the ball falls off, try to catch again in the catching hand before it hits the ground or on the first bounce.



The Ground Strike

Skill instructions

1. Grip the Pioc 's Poc hurl firmly in the dominant hand.

2. Start the swing above the shoulder with the elbow bent.

3. Swing low to the ball on the ground straightening the arm and making a 'C'

 shape.

4. Follow through on the ball to ensure distance.



Ball Handling

Skills instructions

1.Hold the Pioc 's Poc hurl in the dominant hand only with the thumb on the thumbprint.

2. Ready the catching hand to grab the ball when needed.

3. Solo or bounce or tap or balance or flick the ball on the hurl and catch again with the catching hand. 

4. Gradually increase the difficulty of the challenges- go from 1 tap and catch to 2 taps and catch, or from balance for 5 seconds to balance for 10 seconds, or flick the ball over the head and catch in the air, or let the ball fall on the ground and catch on the first bounce.


Skills for Older Kids

The Tackle

Skills instructions

1. 2 players stand equal distance from the ball.

2. On the coach's call, the players race to get over the ball and one returns with it to the starting point. 

3. A ruck can form with both players tussling for the ball.

4. As one player frees the ball from the ruck, they should jab lift and catch the ball to get it away faster.

Tennis- Ball Control

Skill instructions

1. Make 2 sections on a court.  

2. Player 1 must tap and bounce the tennis ball into the opponent's section.

3. Player 2 must return it into Player 1's section.

4. Play competitively or set a target of taps and bounces in a rally.

Squash- Striking

Skill instructions

1. Stand at least 2 metres from a wall with a Pioc 's Poc hurl and a tennis ball.

2. Strike the ball off the wall focusing on power and accuracy.

3. As the ball rebounds off the wall, strike it back off the wall. 

4. Practice both left and right sided swings.
